In november 2019, during a trip to the island of Ishigaki in the prefecture of Okinawa, Jean-Jacques and Marie-France SIRY, member of the board of the association “Sentinels of Peace” were able to meet Mr. Yasuyuki Hazama, director of the Civic Cooperation for Peace Division, accompanied by two collaborators.
The city of Ishigaki is a member of Mayors For Peace and is home to one of the five World Peace Bells in Japan.
We were greeted in the conference hall of Ishigaki town hall and Mr. Hazama first introduced us to the city of Ishigaki, city of peace.
Then he introduced us to this very important point in the city of Ishigaki, which was one of the motivations for our visit, the World Peace Bell.
A peace bell, cast in hopes of permanent peace of the entire world and donated to Ishigaki City, is placed in the center of city, on Shinei park. A second bell, the Smile Bell, established by the goodwill of the citizens of Ishigaki, was installed the same year.
A page dedicated to the World Peace Bells is accessible by this link.
To accompany his presentation, Mr. Hazama gave us a set of documents presenting the commitment of the city of Ishigaki for peace. Then we in turn presented our association and our involvement through various actions in connection with municipalities that are members of Mayors for peace, for a world free of nuclear weapons. We spoke in particular of our two recent actions in Moissac and Lasséran. We presented and gave a text to Mr. Hazama on our approach and the various symbols present in this approach, in particular those insisting on the necessary transmission of the message of the Hibakusha.
